What Are The Concerns Of Credit Card Skimming
The problem of credit card skimming is now the cause for international losses of over one billion dollars a year. In the United States this type of credit card scam is now being used although it is more commonly implimented in Latin America, Asia and Europe.
It can be easy to run a credit card scam, such as this, when you give your credit card to a store employee in order to make a purchase. That store employee may also be swiping your card with a small machine known as a skimmer as well as using it to pay for your purchase; this skimmer takes your information from your card and stores it in this machine’s system to use fraudulently. The information in this skimmer is used by crooks to produce counterfeit cards from the hundreds of debit and credit cards it has information on.
There are skimming rings working nearly in every corner of the world and as soon as your information is put into the skimmer, it is then downloaded into a computer and is ready to be emailed to anyone worldwide. About ten years ago it was not as easy to accomplish this fraud as it can be today, because the skimmers were large, bulky machines which had to be hidden under the counter in the store.
The improvement in the technology of the machines used in this skimming process over the past ten years has made it quite easy to hide the hand-held skimmer out of the sight of the customer who is interested in making the purchase. It is very unfortunate that these skimmers are actually available to be purchased over the internet for around three hundred dollars, however the machine which produces the counterfeit cards costs anywhere from five thousand to ten thousand dollars.
This credit card skimming scam is done in another way; the credit card information is pulled directly out of the card terminals by inserting a skimmer bug and later taking it out with the credit card information on it. The older credit card terminals are the ones that can be violated with this type of scam, but with the newer terminals this bugging has become much less prevalent.
The credit card thieves will quickly skim the information they need off of your cards and then begin to make their purchases with your credit card number. Much of the credit card fraud is committed through using the internet for purchases because of the increased popularity of online shopping. The internet is also used by the thieves to make certain that the card’s information is valid through the purchase of many low ticket items to be assured that the card is active.
The real victim in this crime may be the merchant who had the employee who did the skimming, because the cardholder is usually only responsible for up to fifty dollars of the total amount charged on his card. After the skimming activity is discovered the merchant has to pay for the cost of the investigation and is one hundred percent responsible for the losses caused by the criminal activity. The costs of investigating the charge-back claims of their customers is paid by the investigation fees paid by consumers and businesses who use the credit card companies.
It is common knowledge of the criminals who perform these scams that a purchase of at least 00 must be made before an investigation is begun.
